In all departments in the
Peruvian Amazon (
Amazonas,
San Martin,
Huanuco,
Loreto,
Ucayali,
Madre de Dios, and others), as well as other departments, is celebrated with much fervor and cacophony, the
Feast of San Juan, which is held on June 24 of each year, in all the peoples of the jungle of
Peru.
Previous to the central day on June 23, villagers head to the rivers to purify themselves, being participants of "
Blessed Bath" because it is believed that at this time,
San Juan blesses water courses, and who bathe in them, will have happiness, health and work throughout the all year.
On the 24th, the
iquiteños moved to the neighborhood of
San Juan, where a mass is celebrated and a procession is accompanied by typical band with bells, drums and flutes is made. Then there is the dance of the gang where people dance around a palm tree laden with gifts and is known by the name "
humisha".
The main shows this feast of
San Juan, is that these rides all carry and enjoying a of "
juane" which has a special preparation that usually consists of rice, eggs, olives, sacha, coriander and prey hen farm wrapped in plant leaves known as
bijao or
banana, which is what gives a distinctive flavor. The wrapper of
juane is a round shape depicting the head of this saint, when he was ordered to bring him on a plate by the daughter of
Herodias.
